Optical Discount Centre- Our Tips on Cleaning your glasses
How to Clean Greasy Spectacle Lenses
Sometimes a lens spray isn't enough to clean really greasy lenses. My tip for cleaning very greasy glasses lenses is to use tepid water (never hot) under the tap with mild dishwashing detergent. Then gently absorb the water on your lenses with a tissue (non-moisturising).
Can I use Methylated Spirits for Cleaning Glasses Lenses?
Before you try cleaning your glasses with methylated spirits please read the following tips:
- One of the best ways to clean anti-reflective coatings is with a tissue (non moisturising) dampened with methylated spirits, then wipe the lenses with the tissue.
- HOWEVER if your lenses are made of a plastic called polycarbonate, they must not be cleaned with methylated spirits as this may damage the lens.
- My best tip for this is that if you are unsure about your lens type do not use methylated spirits.
- ALSO, some plastic frames can crack on direct contact with methylated spirits. I have also found that some non-ophthalmic quality lenses, such as lenses used in cheap rimless sunglasses may also be damaged by methylated spirits.
Can I get the scratches polished out of my lenses?
No, unfortunately scratches cannot be removed from lenses by polishing, because this would change the surface shape of the lens. Once this happens, the optics of your lens would change and you would not be able to see with the lenses.NEVER!

- Never use hot water on anti-reflective coated lenses because the coating may crack.
- Never use wet wipes, household disinfectants, cleaners, acetone or soaps with cream or moisturisers on your lenses.
- Never use paper towelling, toilet paper or undampened tissues on lenses because these fibres can cause scratches.
- Apply products such as hairspray and perfume as they can damage lens coatings, and cosmetics can dirty the lenses and nose pads, so avoid using these if possible when wearing glasses.
